The construction industry in China is currently booming. After getting a lot of attention and admiration from different people around the world with their 3D printed houses, the country is now set to create another structure to wow the world.
Several Feet Under
The Songjiang Quarry Hotel, which is also known as the Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental, is one of the most inventive construction projects in China. This five-star hotel is set-up in an abandoned quarry just at the foot of the Tianmenshan Mountain located in Songjiang District, Shanghai. This project placed 90 plus meters of high scrap land into a fully functional use. The luxurious hotel is screaming world-class amenities.
The five-star hotel’s concept is a winning entry from the engineering and design consultancy of Atkins during an international design competition back in August 2006. The design was handled by the concept designed by Atkins, Martin Jochman, to the Chinese developer Shimao, and set to be completed by 2013.
The British-based designed also had the Chinese developer overview the project with his company Quarry Associates (HK) Ltd and his design studio JADE+QA which are all based in Shanghai.
Although initially, the project was set to be completed in 2016, the design optimization and the construction progressed at a swift pace. The work was completed on time but was expected to hold its soft opening by 2017.
Costs a Fortune
The entire resort and hotel cost £345 million and has around 380 to 400 guest rooms with 20 floors. According to the report made by Mail Online, two of the floors are below the ground and features underwater and glass-walled aquariums. The two other floors above the ground will be the property’s conference facility and will be able to accommodate a total of 1000 people.
The resort and hotel will not be complete without a swimming pool and a sports center. There are also multiple restaurants, conference rooms, and banqueting halls. The hotel’s concept is both futuristic and nature-centered. Atkins also designed the structure with an eco-friendly green roof filled with different trees to make it more natural.
The estimated rate for a luxurious stay at the Songjiang Quarry Hotel is US$320 per night.
