A lot of people are looking forward to the Christmas season. It is the time to gather with friends and family. It also means days of no work and no classes and you have more time to rest or take a short vacation.

However, for some people, Christmas is considered a nightmare. Because of the holiday rush, many people want to escape the terror of Christmas. Traveling during Christmas is worse, so most travelers choose to leave earlier than expected or go to places that are far from the crowd.

If you are not a big fan of Christmas or you do not want to see your relatives during the holidays, here are seven destinations that you can visit to escape the holiday season and festivity.

1. Fly to New Zealand

The land of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings is the ideal destination for those who want to go somewhere far. After all, it will take you at least 24 hours to get in New Zealand. This country is also picture-perfect, relaxing, and less commercialized.

2. Go to a Non-Christian Country

Christmas is a Christian tradition, and not all countries are celebrating it. If you want to escape the holidays, going to a non-Christian country is your best bet. If you like the cold weather during December, you may want to fly to Morocco.

3. Visit a Communist Country

Same with No. 2, going to a communist country like Laos is a good choice. It is safe and free from too much noise, merry-making, and celebration. Plus, it is cheap to go on tour, too.

4. Travel to a Party Town

Head to New Orleans a few days before Christmas. The celebration of Christmas in this town is less stressful than others.

5. Go on a Retreat

If you really want to avoid the parties and the holiday rush, go on a retreat. You can take yoga classes or immerse in meditation and come back refresh and rejuvenated.

6. Volunteer

Volunteering will not only help you escape the holidays, but you can also help others.

7. Hide in a Remote Area

If you are lucky enough to see a no-man island, lucky for you. It can be very difficult for you to be found. If you can’t, book at least several days in Lundy, an island in Bristol, Britain where you can disconnect from the world and learn a new experience.
